PE – Physical Education

We balance a commitment to good physical health and fitness for all through a diverse and challenging sports programme with a highly competitive pursuit of excellence for talented players.

We have an enviable record of success in matches and tournaments, due to the enthusiastic dedication of the staff, children and parents, together with our indoor and outdoor facilities and the fully developed Physical Education Programme.

Sports

Our main sports are netball, hockey, swimming and cross country in the Autumn and Spring Terms.  Football, lacrosse, dance and gymnastics are also taught throughout these two terms.  In the Summer Term, tennis, athletics and rounders and swimming are our main sports.

Girls in Years 5 and 6 are able to choose sports to major in during the options programme on a Wednesday afternoon.  A wide variety of sports is on offer and as well as the major sports other choices include volleyball, badminton, ultimate Frisbee and cricket.

To compliment the curriculum sports clubs are run from reception to Year 6 before school, at lunchtimes and after school.  Saturday morning netball is also offered to all children in Years 3 – 6.

Teams are run for all children who wish to be involved and we regularly field A – D teams in all of our major sports. From the age of 5 children swim every week at Abingdon School as part of their PE timetable.  Children swim to a very high standard which is well beyond the National Curriculum standards for these age groups.

House matches are held in a variety of sports every term from Years 1 – 6.  These are very popular with the children and parents and foster a sense of team spirit and identity with everyone striving to win the House shields.

Tennis with specialist

We have a resident tennis coach who gives private lessons before school, at lunchtimes and after school. These have proved very popular and there are now a few sessions for parents!
