On Friday 25th April, Form 4 visited Sulgrave Manor in Northamptonshire. We thoroughly enjoyed dressing up as Tudor
folk and all thecostumes were fantastic!
As soon as we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Simon (a Steward) and Bess (amaid) who directed all the children in a play starting from The Battle of Bosworth up to the end of the Tudor Age. We also did some traditional Tudor dancing in which the fellows showed their ‘reverence’ by bowing (taking their cap off the back of their heads so as not to share their fleas and nits!) and the maids showed their ‘courtesy’ - heals together, toes apart, bend knees.
We then had a tour of the inside of the Manor. We saw the kitchen, great hall and bed chamber. The land that Lawrence Washington built Sulgrave Manor on was actually bought from Henry VIII for £325! We loved finding out that1kg of sugar would have cost £350 nowadays, rich people only ate the ‘upper crust’ of the bread, babies were wrapped in swaddling and hung up on the wall to keep them safe from rats and people caught and ate mice…. And so much more!
