Eco Committee

The Green Team

The Green Team, established in September 2023, is The Manor’s democratically elected eco-committee, consisting of pupils from Reception to Year 6. It aims to provide a platform for members to share and discuss views related to positive environmental change and be proactive in improving the sustainability of the school and wider community. The Green Team meets once a term to discuss and action environmental initiatives within the school. Smaller sub groups, tasked with specific projects, will meet regularly throughout each term, according to their project’s requirements.

The Green Team focused on biodiversity, energy conservation and waste management in their first year and successfully implemented a number of positive changes within the school.  In June 2024, The Green Team achieved an Eco-Schools Green Flag, with Distinction. They received high praise from the Eco Schools committee, including the following feedback:

“You [The Manor] have educated, inspired, and empowered young people in your school, and they are now carrying this passion into their homes and community, sharing it with friends and family.”

Towards the end of 2024, The Manor was announced as a finalist in the “Sustainable Primary School of the Year” category for the Oxford Climate Awards 2024, another proud moment for The Green Team!

ISI Inspectors who visited the school in November 2024 reported that:

“Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for developing their future roles in society.  From an early age, leaders provide a wide range of opportunities to lead and support their school community, be it as school council representatives or as members of ‘the green team’.”

The Green Team is growing in numbers and momentum as the children continue to show a strong interest in and enthusiasm for effecting environmental change.

The outcomes for the children extend beyond the eco-positives, to enhanced team-working, problem-solving and creative-thinking skills, all of which will serve them well in the future.

Parents have reported that their children have shown greater interest in environmental issues outside school, for example, encouraging their families to recycle more at home and to be more environmentally aware in general. One child even asked Father Christmas for a litter picker in his stocking! He then went litter picking in his local community.

However, the best indicator we have for the success of the The Green Team initiative is what the children have to say…

“Being part of The Green Team teaches me how to care for animals, look after the environment and I love representing my class and sharing their ideas about how to make our school a greener place.”
Year 3 Pupil
“We find being part of The Green Team fun and inspiring, we love caring for the environment and know that small changes we make in school are big changes for the planet.”
Year 4 Pupil
“I have been involved in many different projects as a member of The Green Team - I especially enjoyed organising bird watching and helping the Year 1’s spot birds as part of the Big Schools Bird Watch.”
