Learning Support

The Learning Support Department is an integral part of The Manor and is available to all children, staff and parents, with an ‘open door’ policy where everyone is welcome. We are fully committed to promoting early identification and support and our child-centred, personalised approach acknowledges that all of our pupils learn in different ways. We recognise the need for pupils to develop a positive and confident attitude to learning in order to ensure success in the classroom.

Our Aims

Working holistically, the main aim of the Department is to build each child’s self esteem and confidence to take risks and utilise their strengths in order to realise their learning potential.

Our SENCO, who is also the Head of Learning Support and EAL, leads a team of specialist teachers who work across the school to identify, understand and support any child who may have specific learning differences or additional needs.

The Learning Support Team works closely with teachers to provide strategies in-class and to promote active engagement to help children to work towards becoming independent and confident learners.  Staff receive regular training in all the key areas of learning differences.

Our dedicated Cottage lies very much at the heart of the school, allowing for a graduated approach to learning needs. Specialist assessments and observations can be carried out to identify strengths and learning needs within a profile. Small group work to target specific needs and skills is provided by specialist teachers and learning support assistants.  Additionally, individual lessons with a specialist teacher, which are personalised to the needs of the child, can also be provided.

The Cottage offers a welcoming environment where pupils feel sufficiently secure to take risks in their learning. The Department is extremely well-equipped, with children having access to the latest evidence-based learning resources.

We like to think of the Cottage as a resource centre for children, staff and parents, offering support, advice and information for all.

Mrs Jude Grant, SENCo and Head of Learning Support

As Head of Learning Support I have a real passion for supporting children with a range of additional needs; I feel incredibly privileged to have this special role. I have been a primary school teacher for 23 years and I qualified as a SENCo in 2018. As a parent to a neurodiverse child myself, I fully understand the importance of the right support both from a parental and educational viewpoint.

Mrs Emma Naylor, Deputy SENCo

I pride myself on being friendly and approachable; I absolutely love supporting pupils in their learning journeys. As a Specialist Teacher and Assessor in Specific Learning Difficulties, I create effective assessment strategies and interventions tailored to each child. Being dyslexic myself gives me a unique perspective on neurodiversity. I value building strong relationships with students and parents, ensuring everyone feels encouraged and inspired to thrive.

There aren't the words to convey our appreciation and gratitude for all that The Manor has given our daughter over the years. You have nurtured, encouraged, supported and hugged her at all the times she needed it. It's so reassuring to drop your child each morning knowing they will be happy and cared for day after day, year after year. The Manor is a special place that only those who have experienced it will ever truly understand.
