Teachers in Training

22nd November 2017

At The Manor, our teachers’ Professional Development is very important to us. We recently experienced a fantastic textile workshop given by Charlotte Liddle, a textile artist and teacher trainer. Charlotte planned a very hands-on and practical session exploring textile techniques suitable for children aged 3-7. It was great to have teachers from Wootton C of E Primary join us too.
In a busy two hours we explored mark making techniques using natural materials such as beetroot and turmeric inks and dyes to create quick line drawings (using sticks and straws
as tools) before adding colour by using tissue paper. We then used the natural dyes to experiment on plain white cotton fabrics using Shibori dye methods before exploring polyblock printing onto cotton fabric. Charlotte then showed us how to create applique and how to needle felt. The last technique was a real hit with us all!
All in all, it was a fantastic session and by the end we were full of new ideas for teaching. The children are going to have some fantastic arty experiences in the near future!
