Religious Studies at The Manor

15th December 2017

The Manor children have been working hard across their Religious Studies lessons this term, with some new interactive and creative approaches.  Please enjoy reading our highlights from the Prep Department.

In Year 3 pupils have explored the topic of ‘Symbols’, discussing examples found in the world around them, within Christianity and through Bible stories.  Bright and colourful ‘Promise Rainbows’ have been enlivening classroom displays. These were inspired by the story of Noah and reflect pupils’ individual promises.  Advent Wreath posters decorate our Christmas boards, reminding us of the religious significance of this time of year and the Christian symbolism behind this special count down.

Pupils in Year 4 have been busy developing their discussion and enquiry skills, expressing their own and others’ thoughts about religion with enthusiasm.  It has been a pleasure to work with them. The ‘awe and wonder’ of Creation has been explored through visual images and music, with lots of opportunities for group work and drama. Pupils have learned about different Creation Stories and Myths, across cultures and world religions.

In Year 5 the children have been exploring the five pillars of Islam this term, with Mrs Williams. The importance of ‘role models’ has been investigated, with pupils understanding the significance of the prophet Muhammed and his influence in Muslim lives.  Drawing upon this, pupils have related this to their own lives answering the question ‘Who do you look up to and why?’

Very many thanks go to the Early Years and Years 1 and 2 who began our seasonal Christmas celebrations in time-honoured tradition. Performances of our Christingle Service and two Nativities were beautifully shared, showing the magic of the Christmas Story and the significance of Christmas in Christianity.

We finished the term with our very special celebratory Carol Service St Helen’s Church, Abingdon.<
